
Apartment
A suite of rooms usually self–contained with kitchen, laundry and lounge area – laid out as a residence suitable for long–term or short–term stay and generally located in a building with internal access.
Backpacker
Accommodation suitable for travellers "backpacking" who are looking for a place to stay at a low cost. Backpackers typically offer both dormitory (shared) rooms as well as single, twin and double rooms. Often facilities such as kitchens, lounges and bathrooms are shared although some backpackers do offer ensuite options. Options for hiring linen or using your own sleeping bag etc are usually available.
Country Hotel
A traditional hotel or pub located in a provincial or rural area with accommodation located in the same building as the bar and sometimes a restaurant. The bar is typically frequented by both locals and tourists giving it a unique ambiance and allowing travellers to experience genuine Kiwi hospitality in a convivial and reasonably priced establishment. Often facilities such as kitchens, lounges and bathrooms are shared although some Country Hotels do offer ensuite options.
Homestay
Accommodation offered within the private residence or home of New Zealanders. Typically meals are available as well as the use of part of the house such as a lounge, games room and gardens. Facilities are usually ensuite but may be shared with the hosts.
Hotel
Typically hotels have restaurant and bar facilities available and rooms include tea and coffee making facilities, phone, TV, and bathroom facilities. Other facilities such as gyms, games rooms, swimming pools, room service and so on may be available to hotel guests.
Lodge
Often a rustic style of accommodation offered in an intimate lodge which generally has between 4 and 20 rooms. The rooms usually have a private bathroom and tea and coffee making facilities and are often found in unique locations such as near the sea, in a wine region or within a splendid rural setting. Lodges often offer pre–dinner drinks and dinner included in a package price which may be enjoyed in a shared setting with other guests or there may be a restaurant and bar within the lodge.
Motel
Motels usually offer self–contained accommodation with the convenience of kitchen facilities and a private bathroom within the motel unit as well as a phone, made–up beds, TV and car parking. Motel rooms are usually serviced daily. Studio rooms, which are a 1 room arrangement with a bed and lounge area are available as well as units with one or more separate bedrooms. Breakfast can often be purchased at additional cost as required.
Motor Inn / Motor Lodge
Similar to a motel but often located more centrally in the town or city and sometimes being a multistorey building. Tea and coffee making facilities are usually available and rooms with kitchenettes or full facilities may be available depending on the property. Rooms generally have a private bathroom within the motel unit as well as a phone, made–up beds, TV and car parking is available. Motor Inns may have a bar and restaurant available within the complex as well.
